Joan Hyde, Ph.D. CEO of Ivy Hall Senior Living 

For the last twenty-five years Joan Hyde, Ph.D. has worked in the field of gerontological research and practice, including, environmental and program design and implementation, in assisted living, nursing homes, senior housing and other long-term care settings.

She is the Chief Executive Officer of Ivy Hall Senior Living, which provides assisted living management and consulting services and carries out research in the senior living industry. From 1993 to 2006 she served as Chief Executive Officer of Hearthstone Alzheimer Care, where she established and managed eight dementia-specific assisted living residences in the northeast, making Assisted Living a widely accepted setting for dementia treatment.

She has been simultaneously involved in long-term care and senior housing policy and health care quality research. Her research in dementia and assisted living includes two NIA-funded projects, one on environmental design for dementia and the other the development and testing of Assisted Living resident assessment and service planning software. Other research includes analysis of the impact of state regulations of assisted living, and effectiveness of medication management practices.

She also serves as Chairman of the Board of the Assisted Living Research Institute, the non-profit research affiliate of the leading trade organization, the Assisted Living Federation of America and is on the Board of Directors, American Society of Consultant Pharmacists Foundation since 2003.

Dr. Hyde received Commonwealth Institute’s, “Top 100 Women Led Companies in MA”, in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. She holds a research fellow appointment at the Gerontology Institute at the University of Massachusetts in Boston, and was named a Research Associate in the Geriatric Psychiatry Program at McLean Hospital, a teaching facility of Harvard Medical School and Principal Investigator of An Open-Label Pilot Study to Evaluate the Efficacy of Depakote in Patients with Psychological and Behavioral Symptoms of Dementia, Abbott Laboratories.
